Tamale FundraiserMonday, December 13 was the last day to pre-order for tamales.
Pick up date your pre-cooked and frozen tamales are on Wednesday, December 15 from 3-5 p.m. in the school yard.

Pre-school Feasibility We get many questions and calls about pre-school. It is important for us to determine if there is a need before we start the process to open a pre-school. Second Week
 Of Advent!


Immaculate Conception Mass
Wednesday, December 8, at 9:00 a.m. Mass we celebrate the great solemnity of the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary. We go to church to worship God for giving us Mary, who was pure, holy, and worthy of becoming the mother of Jesus Christ. God gave Mary the special grace to be completely pure-free from any stain of original sin. This is what we mean when we call her Mary of the “Immaculate Conception.” “Immaculate” means free from the stain of all original sins.

Students are to wear their complete uniform. Please remind your child to not wear shorts for our Immaculate Conception Mass.


Raffle Drawing
Raffle drawing winners were three of our very own families. Densel Martin, fourth grade won $150 for third prize, Robin Tolentino, first grade won $250 for second prize and Mr. Dennis Martin, and parent of Emma, first grade and Deena, fourth grade won $750 for first prize. Thank you to all our families for your support by selling or purchasing the $75.00 raffle tickets.

Jeans Day
Friday, December 10 students may wear jeans and any Christmas color t-shirt for $1.00. Pay an extra $1.00 for Christmas accessories.  Proceeds will go to St. Vincent de Paul at St. Dominic Parish to feed the needy families during the Christmas Holidays.

Christmas Program
School Choirs: We sing at the School Christmas Program on December 13 and at the Children’s Christmas Mass on Friday, December 24 at 5:00 P.M.
A pre-Mass prelude will begin at 4:45 p.m. PLEASE BE HERE BY 4:30 P.M. in the church, wearing choir attire (white shirt/blouse, black pants/shirts for girls).

Santa’s Workshop
Starting Monday, December 13 students will have an opportunity to shop for mom, dad, sister, brother, or other family members. Please place money for kinder, first, and second grade students in an envelope. The parents assisting in Santa’s Workshop will make proper change and receipt for the students.

Our students are asked to “Do Something Great”. As Christians, we achieve greatness by sacrifice: by putting what we have and who we are at the service of others. We ask that each student bring an item that will be helpful to prepare Thanksgiving and Christmas gift and food boxes.
Last year we at St. Dominic School were able to load a truck full of boxes for families living on Skid Row. For twenty years, the students of our Catholic Schools have done something great. They have put themselves at the service of these struggling families and brought the Light of Christ and the Magic of Christmas to their doorsteps.

Cookie Dough Cookie dough is ready for pick-up.  Pick-up will be on Friday, November 12 from 1:30-6:30 p.m. in the room next to Music.
Students of families that bought 6 tubs (1 case) have free dress this Friday. Please follow the dress code for free dress. Families with 2 students must have bought 12 tubs (2 cases), 3 students must have bought 18 tubs (3 cases). Families must decide which student gets free dress.

PTO Mandatory Meeting Our mandatory general PTO meeting has been moved from Nov. 17 to Nov. 10. There is a $15.00 charge if you miss a mandatory meeting.

Celebration, November 9St. Dominic School will begin celebrating its “85” years of offering quality catholic education on Tuesday, November 9. We will continue our celebration with students, teachers, and parents throughout this year. During Catholic Schools Week we will invite our alumni and grandparents to join our celebrations.

Saturday: Bingo, Pilipino, security, set-up, clean up, and Italian food.
Sunday: dessert, bingo, Hispanic, Italian, Pilipino, security, drinks and clean-up.

Virtus & Fingerprinting
All parents that help us out with our lunch program, lunch supervision, classroom, fieldtrips and coaching need to attend a Virtus training and get fingerprinted before attending any activity.
Fingerprinting schedule for October and November are in the school office. Please
call Mrs. Oliver for locations.
Protecting God’s children, an Adult Awareness session is a three-hour training that helps parents to understand the facts and myths about child sexual abuse: how perpetrators operate; and how caring adults can take five important steps to keep children safe.
Go online to http://www.virtus.org/ to register for October 30, a three hour session that will be held in the St. Dominic Community Center.

High School Night at Holy Trinity School
Holy Trinity Prep School, located at 3716 Boyce Avenue in Los Angeles, invites our 8th grade students to a High School Night on Tuesday, November 9th from 7-9 pm. Representatives from Holy Family, Cathedral, Bellarmine Jefferson, Notre Dame High, Immaculate Heart High, Providence, St. Francis, Notre Dame Academy, Loyola, Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy, and Bishop Alemany will be there. These high schools will be available to answer questions, provide admission packets and to speak to all the wonderful qualities of their respective high schools. All students must wear green or white polo shirt and green pull over sweatshirt with P.E. shorts for picture day.

Halloween Carnival
All Parents Welcome!
Friday, October 29
9:00-12:00
Noon dismissal

Kinder to second grade students go out at 9:00-9:45 a.m.
Third to fifth grade students come out the second session at 9:45-10:30.
Sixth to eighth grade students come out at 10:30 to 11:15.

All students will participate in the parade at 11:20. The raffle will follow the parade at 11:40 a.m.

Students are allowed to come dressed to school in their costumes. Please have students wear their athletic shoes. 
No guns, knives, swords are allowed as part of the costume.


Jeans Day October 15
Students will be allowed to wear jeans on Friday, October 15 if they pay $1.00.
Please refer to handbook for proper attire.
No shorts for jeans day.



If you want to participate in a sport fun attire day pay $1.00 extra to wear favorite sport jersey, and $1.00 extra to wear favorite sport cap.

Proceeds go to funds for celebrating our 85th anniversary.

Mass Day
Monday: 5th to 8th grade
Wednesday: 3rd and 4th grade
Thursday: second, first and kinder

Please walk your child if you come late on Mass day.

First Friday Mass
Students are to wear complete uniform. No shorts on First Friday Mass.


Choicelunch
We need sixth grade parent volunteers to serve during the month of November. You can earn lunch credit if you serve during the month of November. You would need to start at 11:30 to set-up the lunches and end at 12:30 after packing up the containers. If you are a sixth grade parent and interested please call the school office ASAP.

Discovering Our Faith
Join Fr. Michael Carey for the second lecture on the series of Discovering Our Faith. This series is October 12 from 7:30 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. in the parish hall.
The lecture covers God the Father and Creator. Bring your Catholic Catechism. Review God: One and Three, CCC 198-278,
Creator of Angels, Heaven, and Earth, CCC 325-354 and The Creation and Fall of Man, CCC 355-421.
Parents attending the lecture will earn one service hour.


Parish Fiesta
The parish fiesta is scheduled for November 5th, 6th, and 7th. Please check your schedule and sign up for you mandatory 5 hours. The sign-up book is located in the school office on the front counter. Please make note of the date and time you will attend. Available time and dates are first come. Thank you for your service.


Virtus
All adults in direct contact with our students
at school must have Virtus training. Parents
that helps with lunch program, lunch
playground supervision, classroom help, fieldtrips, and coaching need this training.

Protecting God’s children Adult Awareness session is a three-hour training that helps parents to understand the facts and myths
about child sexual abuse; how perpetrators operate; and how caring adults can take five important steps to keep children safe.

Our cookie dough fundraiser ends Friday, October 8. Please write all checks payable to St. Dominic PTO. Order forms are to be given to the teacher or brought to the school office.

PTO Apparel Update
Attn: Parents! For those that have ordered Gray sweatshirts and P.E. shirts, your orders are currently being processed. The apparel items are expected to arrive Oct. 9, 2010. Thank you for your continued support!
Prepaid order forms are still available at the school office. Cash and checks accepted.

Halloween Carnival Meeting
If you signed-up for the Halloween committee or would like to join the committee, please join your PTO board on Wednesday, October 6th at 6:30 p.m. for a meeting. The meeting will be held in the school library. Come and find out how you can help!

Good-Touch Bad-Touch
Our Good-Touch Bad-Touch program will begin on Monday, October 11. Any student without permission to participate in the program will be kept in the school office during their religion period. Your parent good-touch bad-touch booklet is enclosed in the Family Envelope.

Progress Reports

Student progress reports go out Monday, October 11. This is the perfect take time to discuss with your child and communicate with the teacher. Your child has 30 days before the end of the trimester. The first trimester ends November 24.

ITBS Testing
ITBS testing will continue until Friday, October 8. ITBS make-up testing will begin at 8:45 a.m. on Thursday and Friday.
Our priority is to have student’s make-up reading comprehension, math, and CogAt. Please help us by bringing students to school by 8:00 a.m.


Living Rosary
October is the month of Mary and the Rosary. On October 7th, our student council will lead us in praying the Living Rosary. Student council will act out scenes from the Joyful Mysteries. You are invited to join us in this beautiful tribute to our Blessed Virgin Mary. The rosary will be held in the parish hall at 2:00 p.m.

Art and Dance After School Classes
Center of the Arts will offer art and dance
classes here on Tuesday and Wednesday from 3-4 p.m. pay $25 for each 10 week session. Classes begin October 11.
We only have 2 families signed up for these classes. No one will be turned away, scholarships available!

You will find the prepaid order form for the gray sweatshirts and P.E. t-shirts enclosed in the family envelope. They are available in Youth and Adult sizes: Small, Medium, and Large. All items are sponsored by the PTO Board and are available exclusively through school. All proceeds benefit school and our students. So don’t delay, place your order today!

Office
Scrip
Scrip can be purchased in the Rectory Office 7 days a week. We try to keep an inventory of all the items on the yellow Scrip Form.

Items on the orange Scrip Form are special order items. Scrip will be ordered on Tuesday, and you will have it by Thursday.

Right now we have an inventory of scrip for Nanay Gloria and Seafood Ranch. When that scrip is gone, we will no longer be ordering scrip from those two stores.

New to our scrip list is Quiznos.

Good-Touch Bad-Touch
Our Good-Touch Bad-Touch program will begin on Monday, October 11. Students must have a signed permission slip to participate in the program. The class room teacher explained the good-touch bad-touch program during our Back to School Night. Please call the school office @323-255-5803 if you have any questions.


Choicelunch
Our seventh grade parents have an opportunity of earn lunch credit for their child during the month of October. We have one seventh grade parent that has volunteered. I would like to have an alternate parent to assist during this month. If you are interested please call the school office ASAP.





ITBS Testing
ITBS testing will continue for two weeks and end on Friday, October 8.
Please help us out by bringing the students to school on time. Most teachers begin ITBS testing by 8:10 am. If your student comes late and testing for that class has started they will be kept in the office until the following test begins. Please try to make appointments for the afternoon during this testing period. We will have make-up test on Thursday, October 7 and Friday, October 8. Our priority is to have student’s make-up reading comprehension, math, and CogAt.

Hot Weather
We will keep our students indoors during this hot weather. Students will not go out for P.E., recess or lunch recess.

Back to School Night
Wednesday, September 15th and Thursday, September 16th @ 7:30 is Back to School Night. This is a MANDATORY event. A parent of every student must be present.

Come and visit your student’s classroom, meet their teacher, find out valuable information about curriculum and classroom specific topics, and get to know their daily schedule and routine. Participate in question and answer sessions with teachers.

Please remember Back to School Night is an obligatory event and provides an immeasurable opportunity for parents to learn what is expected this academic year. Thank you in advance for taking an active role in your student’s education in St. Dominic Parish School.

Lunch Program
Students seemed to enjoy the first week hot lunch menu. They actually enjoy the fruit and vegetables.

We need a seventh grade parent volunteer to serve the lunches for the month of October. The parent serving the lunches will receive lunch credit for their child.

Student Store
Our student store is open during recess only. Items available; ice cream, popsicles, chocolate milk, cheerios, popcorn, Gatorade, water, chip ahoy cookies, famous Amos cookies, Oreos cookies, rice Krispi treats, string cheese, fruit roll ups, sun chips, cheetos, and Doritos. All items in the student store sell for 50 cents.

Discovering Our Faith
Fr. Michael and Sr. Joyanne will start the first series of lectures on the Creed. Lectures begin today Tuesday, September 14 at 7:30 in the parish hall.
Please bring a copy of the Catholic Catechism.
Parents that attend the lecture will earn service hours. Students of parents that attend the lecture may wear free dress
tomorrow. Please follow the handbook guidelines for free dress.

Music: Grades 2-8
Precorder and recorder forms were sent home Thursday, September 9. They may be ordered online also. We have extra forms in the school office.

School Choir Update: We will have short try-outs after school on Tuesday and Thursday from 3:00-3:30 p.m. in the music room. Grades 3-8 are eligible.

Fundraising
Cookie dough order sheets are enclosed. week.  A tub sells for $12 and $14. Show your support by purchasing 6 tubs. This is NOT a mandatory event but all our students benefit from the profit.

Office

  • Our children choice program started today. The students enjoyed their first children choice day. Remember no sodas and no candy for lunch.
  • Please complete and return your emergency card ASAP.
  • If your student needs to have any medication at school, including over the counter, please ask the office for a release form. This includes inhalers for asthma.
  • Eighth grade parents have the opportunity to volunteer to serve lunch for the month of September. You earn lunch credit for your student when you volunteer. I have some seventh grade parents that have responded. Please call the school office @255-5803 if you are interested.



Sports

Students have football and volleyball try-outs and practice this week. Please remember to pick up students on time. Students are not allowed to wait in the parking lot or by the school corner for their parents.



Safety Valet

I would like to thank all of you who have volunteered during the morning for Safety Valet. Seventh grade parents are scheduled for this week. This is an easy and safe way to earn service hours.

Family Mass
Join our eighth grade students and parents this Saturday, September 11 for their Family Mass. Mass starts at 5:00 pm. This year we will invite our St. Dominic parishioners to join us for refreshments in the school lunch area.
