Choice Lunch
It’s time for 5th grade parents to volunteer for helping with Choice Lunch. Please call the school office before Thursday, Nov. 1 if you are interested in volunteering.

Parents need to be fingerprinted and have received Virtus training to volunteer to serve lunch to the children.

Picture Day
All students, including the preschoolers, will take their school picture on Thu. Nov.1. The photographer will begin with preschool at 8:30 a.m. in the school library.

Students are to wear their complete uniform and their green St. Dominic sweater for picture day.  Students should NOT wear their P.E. uniform.

Make-up picture day is Wed. Dec. 5.


All Saints Day
Thu. Nov. 1 is a holy day of obligation. We will celebrate the Solemnity of All Saints Mass at 9:00 a.m. Please remember to have your child bring a donation for the collection.

Students are to wear their school uniform. Students should wear their skirts/jumpers or long pants (no shorts).

Parish Fiesta
All school families, including the preschoolers, received 2 tickets for the Parish Fiesta. The ticket money is to be turned in to the parish office, across from the school office.

All parents are expected to work 5 hours during the fiesta. Hours not worked during the fiesta will be charged at $20.00 per hour.

Parents are asked to also provide baked goods for the dessert booth. You may earn up to an additional 5 hours for your donation.
Parents may earn a maximum of 10 hours at the parish fiesta.

Year of Faith
Our Holy Father, Pope Benedict XIV, has proclaimed a Year of Faith in an effort to nourish and strengthen our belief in God and his Church. From October 11, 2012 to November 24, 2013 we are challenged to participate in prayer, study, outreach, and evangelization as we strive to live out our call to follow Christ in today’s world.

Please take some precious family time to study the enclosed brochure, The Year of Faith.  Since you have wholeheartedly chosen to send your children to a Catholic school, it is important that you keep up with the teachings of our Church.  Remember, parents, that you are your child’s first and most important teacher!  Please help your children become HOLY.  Happy teaching!


Academic Decathlon
Academic Decathlon Logic lunchtime meetings will continue with Mr. Snyder on Monday Oct. 29.  Mrs. Hunt is on campus Tuesday Oct. 30 to arrange an after-school schedule for Super Quiz subjects.  Mr. Snyder and Mrs. Hunt will both be at the Friday after-school meeting from 1:45 to 3:30 p.m. Team candidates need to pay their $25 registration fee by Friday Nov. 2.  If you are interested in a specific subject, look at the Study Guide which can be found at the website http://academicdecathlon.wikispaces.com/Study+Guide .  Books for the Super Quiz need to be purchased ASAP.

School Choir
School choir will hopefully start next week, on Thursdays from 3:00-4:00 pm or before school 7:30-7:55 am on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

Students need to return permission slips before choir admittance. Forms will be given out during music class.

Adopt-A-Family
The annual Adopt-a-Family program is one of those opportunities to bring the Light of Christ and the joy of Christmas to families living on the desolate streets of Skid Row in Downtown Los Angeles.

Our Adopt-a-Family Donation Drive starts on Thu. Nov. 1. Students are encouraged to bring in the following items: Canned vegetables, canned fruit, canned tuna, canned chicken, canned stews, canned soups, boxed mac/cheese, tomato sauce/paste, packaged breakfast cereals, crackers, cookies, flour, sugar, rice, beans, pasta, bar soap, toothpaste, toothbrushes, paper towels, and toilet paper.

Halloween Carnival
We thank the parents for their generous donations towards the Halloween Carnival!

All students, including the preschoolers, received a treat bag with candy and games thanks to parent donations.

All profits from the lunch, dessert booths and raffle go to the Parent/Teacher Organization (PTO).

Student Council Red Ribbon Week Activities: Say No To Drugs
Tuesday: Hugs not Drugs Day - Students may bring a favorite stuffed animal (not too big) to hug.

Wednesday: Students may wear jeans and a red shirt and red accessories such as hats, socks, shoes, etc. There is no cost to wear jeans, red shirt, and accessories.

Thursday: Student Council will sell pre-ordered Red Nachos for $1.50.

Halloween Carnival
Students are to come to school dressed in their Halloween costumes on Fri. Oct. 26. Students should wear athletic shoes with their costumes.

Guns, swords, or weapons of any type are NOT ALLOWED with the costumes.

Students will be given a trick or treat bag. All games are FREE for all students.

Please send money for students to purchase Halloween desserts. Cookies, brownies, and cupcakes will be sold for .50 cents to $1.00.

Kindergarten-2nd grade will go out to play games at the carnival from 9:00 to 9:30 a.m., 3rd-5th grades will come out from 9:30 to 10:00 a.m.,, and 6th-8th grades will come out from 10:00 to 10:30 a.m.

St. Dominic Preschool, Lutheran Preschool, and Pathway Preschool will join us during the Halloween Carnival.

Every grade will come for the costume parade at 10:30 a.m.. The raffle will begin at 11:30 a.m.
Good/Bad Touch Program
On Mon. Oct. 29, teachers will begin teaching the Good/Bad Touch program. Students need written permission to participate in this safety program.

Students without permission to participate in Good Touch/Bad Touch will sit in the school office during their religion class and work on written work. If you have any questions, call the office at (323) 255-5803.

Parents can earn service hours for coaching during the decathlon studies. You must be fingerprinted and have completed Virtus.

Sizzler Night
Sizzler will be mailing us a check for $336.29 in two weeks.  Thank you all for your help in making this event happen.

Sizzler
Please join us for a fundraiser dinner at Sizzler in Eagle Rock tomorrow, Oct. 17, from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m.

Students that attend the Sizzler Night fundraiser may wear FREE dress this coming Friday, Oct. 19.

Benchmark Assessments
We are assessing the students in 2nd-8th grades on some of the Common Core State Standards this week, Oct. 15-17. The students are assessed in language arts and math and the test is a multiple choice format.

These CCSS assessments will occur in October, February and May. The CCSS are some of the standards that students should master for their grade level by the end of the current school year.

Art Class
Professor Annie Mann has joined St. Dominic School to teach art. All grade levels, kinder through 8th, will have one hour of art each week.

Grades 5th, 4th, 2nd, and 6th will have art instruction on Mondays. On Wednesdays, kinder, 1st, 3rd 8th, and 7th will have art.


Preschool and Kindergarten Mass
The preschool and kindergarten Mass is this coming Saturday, Oct. 20, at 5:00 p.m.

Families will gather afterwards in the school lunch area for a potluck dinner.


Parish Fiesta Raffle Tickets
Enclosed you will find our Parish Fiesta Raffle tickets. If you received your set of tickets at Mass on Sunday, please return your envelope to the office. Thank you in advance for your continued support of the Parish.

In today’s envelope you will find the Fiesta Ticket Form. The last day for pre-sale tickets is Thu. Nov. 1.

Bartolo Photography has merged with Life Touch.

School photo order forms will come from Life Touch. You will now able to order online before Picture Day. If you prefer to order by form, the order form will be included in next week’s Family Envelope.

Scrip
The scrip committee will sell scrip this Sunday at all the Masses.

Please turn in your pre-order forms by Oct. 12 to be filled for Sunday, Oct. 14. Pick-up your order before or after any Sunday Mass.

Sizzlers
Please join us next Wednesday, Oct. 17 at Sizzlers in Eagle Rock from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m.

This fundraiser will be a fun opportunity for the students to have dinner and chat with their friends. Parents will have an opportunity to meet and make new friends.

Halloween Carnival
All students including preschoolers will have their Halloween Festival on Friday Oct. 26.

Join the fun activities during our Halloween Carnival. This is the most parent attended events. Parents can earn service hours by working in the booths, setting up and tearing down booths, and donating items for the event.

Game booths are FREE for all students.  Students receive small prizes after each game. A bag of goodies will be given to all students

The desserts booth sells items from 50 cents to a dollar. Pre-order hot dogs forms are enclosed in the family envelope.

Halloween Costumes
Students should come to school dressed in the costumes. Students must wear tennis shoes with their costumes. No weapons or swords are allowed as part of the costumes.

Students may paint their faces, wear wigs, hats and mask.

The event starts at 9:00 a.m. and ends at 12:00 noon. The parade takes place at 11:00 a.m. The raffle will start at 11:30 a.m.

Center for the Arts
The after school enrichment art program incorporated into our existing daycare program for the students that registered will starts next week.

Class begins Tuesday, Oct. 16 at 3:00 p.m. in the daycare room. The class is from 3:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.

Parish Fiesta
All school parents including preschool are required to work 5 hours at the Parish Fiesta. The fiesta is on Nov. 2nd, 3rd, and 4th.

Parents are asked to sign up in the school office for the day, hours, and booth they prefer to work.

The school is responsible for the dessert booth. We ask that parents donate baked goods for service hours. Each grade is assigned a day for dropping off the goodies. Thank you in advance for your generous donations.

Choice Lunch
Sixth grade parents – it’s your opportunity to volunteer to serve lunch for the month of October. You earn lunch credit for your child when you volunteer.

Parent volunteers need to have been fingerprinted and have attended a Virtus class.

Living Rosary
In honor of Our Lady of the Rosary we will have our traditional prayer service of the Living Rosary on Monday, October 8 at 9:00 a.m. in the Parish Hall.

Cookie Dough
The cookie dough fundraiser has been extended for an additional week! Please submit your order forms by this Friday, Oct. 5.

Mrs. Matas will order the cookie dough on Friday. It should take about two weeks to arrive. The estimated delivery is the week of Oct. 22, just in time to bake Halloween cookies for treat-or-trick!

Parish Picnic
Order your FREE lunch tickets for the Annual Parish Picnic which is this Saturday, October 6, 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. at Eagle Rock Park. Tickets are available in the parish office.

The Parish Council needs to have an accurate count of people attending the picnic to provide every person with food.

Children will enjoy some fun games monitored by the parish Youth Group.



High School Nights
Because it is impossible for representatives from the Catholic high schools to attend a High School Night at every Catholic elementary school, our deanery will host two High School Nights:

Holy Trinity will host a High School Night on Tuesday, Oct. 23.

Incarnation in Glendale will host a High School Night on Thursday, Oct. 25. 

Enclosed is the Los Angeles Private School Guide for the High School Open Houses.

Safe Kids Assembly
Parents, please remember to submit the walking permission slip if you want your child to participate in the walking part of tomorrow’s assembly. We have permission slips for 70% of the students.

The students will walk with representatives from law enforcement on Maywood to Colorado Blvd., to Eagle Rock Blvd., and finally back to Merton Ave. and enter into our school playground for the assembly.

The assembly starts at 8:30 a.m.

Center for the Arts
The afterschool enrichment art program incorporated into our existing daycare program is FREE for the 11 students that registered by Friday, September 28.

The 7 non-daycare students who were are on the waiting list need to register by this Friday, October 5, for a fee of $30. Only 6 spots are available to join the class. Available spots are on a first-come, first-served basis. 




Scrip
Mrs. Manning and the hard working scrip team will sell scrip on Sunday, October 14, before and after the Masses.

Please come and help us out by purchasing scrip cards for your favorite restaurants and stores. Scrip has gas cards, too. Scrip cards make great birthday gifts or you can even get a jump on your Christmas shopping!


Preschool & Kinder Family Mass
The room parents will contact the preschool and kinder parents to invite and encourage you to participate in this once a year Mass and potluck activity.

Students and parents will have their first Family Mass on Saturday, October 20 at 5:00 p.m.

After Mass you will come across to the school lunch area and have a potluck dinner, get to know each other and build community.
